My grandmother use to make these pickles. She would add red or green food color to the mixture to dye them. She would use these at Christmas. She would also candy them by rolling them in sugar. My brother and I were talking about Nanny (grandmother) making these pickles just yesterday. She would hide them, and he would find them, and go hide and eat them. They were like candy, in a jar rolled in sugar. He is 60, and Nanny was born in 1900, and past away in 1996. She was a special lady. Miss her dearly.

Thank you for posting this recipe. I grew up with these on the Christmas table every year and its one of the things I have to have along with spiced whole stone in peaches and those brightly colored spiced crabapples. We never made them but bought them. I moved to chicago and the stores just don't have these southern tasty holiday treats. At least now I can spread the love and get these northerners hooked on the good stuff. Keep on cookin and saving our food haritage one recipe at a time. :)
