This special biscotti recipe has a twist. Yes, we're playing a little cat and mouse here at Big Mill B&B Extended Stay.

Winter had been cold here in eastern North Carolina and Moses, the farm kitty, was ready to sit on the back steps and socialize with the guests here at Big Mill Bed and Breakfast Extended Stay. Moses has passed, so sad, but now Raisin has taken the job.

While waiting for spring to arrive, I decided to write a cookbook –The Country Cats Cookbook in honor of my special kitties. What follows will be my signature recipe. Hope you like it … I do. APRIL FOOL!!!!

Our new calico, Raisin, makes life more fun on the farm at Big Mill B&B near Greenville, NC. She's quite a character ...

Little Raisin Fur Person came to live at Big Mill in November of 2012. I have wanted to write about her for a long time, but she has been in motion – I couln’t get a picture of her. I finally have a photo, but only one. Meet Raisin:

When I was little, my sister and brother had already moved out. But they left stuff behind — my brother John left all his 78 rpm records, so I played them all. My favortie song was Brazen Little Raisin. (you need to listen to this fun song).

It seems that a little grape didn’t listen to his mama – he stayed in the sun too long and he became a raisin:

“way out in California where the sunbeams shine
a little grape was hanging on a big grape vine.
Mama Grape said, “Careful, don’t get too much sun,
’cause grapes turn in to raisins when they’re too well done.”

So all these years I have wanted a cat named Moses; that I have done. I wanted a cat named Sausage; that I have done. And now I have Raisin. She’s sweet, albeit strange and a bit shy. She would love to meet you. There was also a record about a big baboon at the Animal Fair. I do NOT want a cat named Baboon – or, maybe I do?

It’s Christmas here at my favorite Bed and Breakfast in North Carolina … I am the resident fur person and that is my opinion.

You know I have been around a lot, being a cat and all that. So when I picked Chloe’s B&B, it was after much thought and I love it here. I even really like Chloe.

That is except when she gives me a bath and when she makes me dress up and pose for a photo. I knew this was coming, but she sneaked up on me. Hope you like me in my Santa outfit. Harrumph.

She tried to get me to wear a beard, but I flatly refused. I am a lady — what was Chloe thinking? Thankfully, it was only a Santa hat.

Life on the farm is always special, but at Christmas, it is magical. We never really finish decorating but we have such fun doing it. Chloe says I am a big help, Well, I try.

Below: Chloe made the wreath on the Pack House from our grapevine prunings.

Chloe and I both want to let all our friends and guests know how much we care about them. This has been a wonderful year here at Big Mill Bed and Breakfast and we have met the very best folks. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Seasons Greetings and we hope to see all of you soon.

Oh, but I love to pick up pecans. And I like to play with limbs and sticks in the yard; but mostly I like to roll in the sunshine and throw out a few sage remarks while Chloe picks up the pecans. (I am not sure if she enjoys this as much as I do.)

Pecans and Chloe’s old Red Flyer wagon from years ago. Chloe loves that Pecan Picker gadget

Our four pecan trees were planted by Chloe’s folks in 1922, so they are quite grand and stately. We haven’t had pecans for a few years, mostly because of the storms.

When Chloe was a kid she used to sell pecans and sometimes she sold as many as 15 bushels. She told me that in all her years growing up on the farm at Big Mill she had never been hit on the head by a pecan until yesterday. Now she is wearing a hat.

This year we have five bushels of nuts and I must inspect them all.

Chloe is very fond of a potato crate and we store pecans in them. I see nothing noble about these crates. If I went in a car I used to have to ride in this ridiculous crate. It was humiliating. Imagine showing up for an event in a crate like some Eastern North Carolina country hick. I am not the one who has a Redneck Woman license tag on my pick up truck. Now I have my own carrier but I want a nicer, padded one.

We are working on a Big Mill pecan biscotti recipe. I don’t much care for biscotti, but Chloe tells me they go great with our guest’s morning coffee here at Big Mill Bed and Breakfast.

Mouse flavored Biscotti might be nice – Chloe even made this for me.

I want to thank all of you kind folks who sent me presents and treats…you are great!

Chloe announced to me several days ago that I should take a bath and make myself pretty because we were going to a special event.

Jim Horton at Blessing of the Animals

I didn’t really think she meant it. I don’t get out much, and we cats can be “subject to violent anxiety at any uprooting.” *

Well, today we motored in a car into Williamston and gathered on the lawn of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. Now that I am a published author I have obligations.

Chloe told me that she went to the Blessing of the Animals at Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City and they had giraffes, elephants, chickens, snakes and most of the animals that Moses had in his ark. I have never seen an elephant and was looking forward to seing one. I haven’t even seen a chicken. I am a wee bit disappointed that I could not see an elephant.

Anyway, there were some very poorly behaved critters at our blessing. I am dignified. I am a cat of integrity. I know how to act. I did not say a word, I did not bite anybody, I did not growl. My new friend Izzy bit Susan.

Here I am with the Reverend Jim Horton and Chloe. We attended what appeared to be a Fur Ball Festival on the Feast of St. Francis, patron saint of animals, birds and the environment. I rather liked his prayer; we could all learn from St. Francis.

I have now been blessed and I have to admit I feel like a new Fur Person. I wonder if I have to do this eight more times?

P.S. I just received a letter from one of my admirers telling me that it was Noah on the ark, not Moses. Forsooth, I could have sworn it was my namesake.

Chloe has tried to help by giving me numerous baths. I hate to admit it, but I am actually getting so that I don’t even mind. I also have been given several sponge baths, whatever that is. I do feel better after it is all finally over.

Chloe wanted to post a photo of me taking a bath, but that is not very lady-like, and I do have my scruples. When Playboy did the photo shoot here at Big Mill, they asked me to be in the May issue; I refused.

I haven’t done any hunting; it has just been too hot. I haven’t visited neighbors, their dogs are a bunch of hooligans and I prefer to stay home.

The mockingbird eats my food, I don’t care. The hummingbirds fly right up to me and I don’t move a muscle. I am practicing my “I don’t care and am not interested” attitude. I spend much time with my back turned to folks who want my attention. I have to maintain my superiority.

I miss sweet Moses every day. She is now feeding the fig trees. I planted two pomegranates but she quickly disposed of them. She must like the fig.
